Built in 1921, This was the summer home of William Wrigley, Jr., his wife Ada and their kids. You may recognize that name “Wrigley” from your favorite chewing gum, or as the baseball stadium that houses the Chicago Cubs. Yep, same Wrigleys! Out here in Los Angeles though, we know William Wrigley and his family best as the owners of Catalina Island beginning in 1919. Their whole clan was instrumental in developing Catalina into the tourist destination it is today. Mt. Ada’s architect, David Renton, was also the superintendent of construction for the Santa Catalina Island Co. It’s an impressive enough example of Georgian revival design – this was still about eight years before Spanish colonial became the house style of Catalina. But really, the most spectacular part of the house is the bonkers views. Head to the wraparound veranda, 350 feet up, and you’re king or queen of the ocean. Fun fact: the Wrigley Summer Cottage is also the southernmost Los Angeles site on the National Register of Historic Places!
