For more than 30 years, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned the world about the imminent threat of an Iranian nuclear bomb. Yet, unlike Iran, Israel has never signed the 1968 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, the global agreement designed to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons. Nor has Israel ever admitted to possessing nuclear weapons. In 1986, former nuclear technician Mordechai Vanunu exposed Israel’s nuclear programme, revealing it had produced enough plutonium to build between 100 and 200 nuclear warheads. Before the story was published in The Sunday Times, he was lured to Rome by a Mossad agent, kidnapped, and secretly taken back to Israel, where he spent 18 years in prison. Nearly four decades later, Israel still neither confirms nor denies possessing nuclear weapons. So how did Israel build a nuclear programme that remains officially undeclared?
