KANONPACHI is an extremely obscure doujin shmup from 2004. The only information I can find on this is an ancient 2chan thread and a dev page that no longer exists. One of the strangely many doujin shmups based on Key visual novels. Despite what the game's called, the system is more akin to Progear no Arashi. Normal shots cancel bullets in the range of an enemy explosion and the focused homing shot does the thing where it cancels all adjacent bullets in the enemy explosion. You kinda need to use this for survival as the bullet count goes crazy after stage 1. The first two stages are fine but I have no idea how you do stage 3 and 4, game's pretty hard. No practice mode or anything either. The final boss also just seems impossible with these hitboxes lol. You can pick between Ayu and Nayuki. Ayu is slow and weak but has a (very) wide shot. Nayuki is fast and powerful but only has a forward shot (that's still quite wide). I see no reason to ever pick Ayu over Nayuki. Funnily enough the score extend threshold is different between shots: Ayu: 5 million and then every 10 million. Nayuki: 5 million and then every 12,5 million. Bombs are pretty scarce as you only get 1 bomb per life. Scoring then becomes really important because you really need those extra lives. And you definitely don't want to die with like 3 or 4 bombs in stock. The scoring system is somewhat wacky. Cancelled bullets with shot raises the meter on the right to a max of 120%, this is the multiplier. Then when you hold focus, you cash in on the multiplier while the meter slowly drains, this also slowly drains the multiplier. The catch is that letting go of focus at any point instantly resets it back to 0%. Which makes you ask the question if you want to hold focus for long or if you just want to do quick x10 cash-in's and then go back to rebuilding the meter. The rules seem a bit different for bosses as beating phases with shot still gives the full multiplier. But then you only get the full multiplier for the final kill with focus only...? Stage 1 is kinda worthless for score compared to stage 2 and 3. Stage 1 gives like 6 million while the others give like 50+ million each. Cool game that is kinda ruined by insanely bad hitboxes. Your own hitbox seems to be like an ESP Ra.De neck hitbox but the hit detection still doesn't seem to make sense sometimes. Hitboxes also seem way bigger than what they should be for what the game expects of you. This really needed a visible hitbox to make it less ambiguous. Would play more of this but it's really not fun like this lol.
