Florida, the beautiful! This is the second video in the "Expedition to the Deep Southeast" series ( • Expedition to the Deep Southeast (FL, GA),... ) and the first story from Florida's East Coast. In this and following episodes, we follow the Florida East Coast Railway (FEC) first south down to West Palm Beach, then back north again. The FEC main line is an almost straight shot from Jacksonville, FL to Miami, FL - more than 350 miles long. There aren't any topographic challenges, which is why track speed is 60 mph in most sections. FEC is a Class 2 railroad; the rather low traffic density makes railfanning somewhat challenging. ATCS Monitor, which currently still works for most of the part of the line between Jacksonville and West Palm Beach, has been immensely helpful for finding the trains and scheduling the meet, though. In this video, we follow the FEC main line from the south end of Bowden Yard in Jacksonville south to Cocoa, with intermediate stops in Bunnell, Ormond Beach and Daytona Beach. The weather was as rocky as one can expect it from Florida in summer. Sunshine, clouds, heavy rain, and thunderstorms followed upon each other in rapid succession. Yet the trains were interesting, powered by the ES44C4 combos with LNG fuel tender and GP40-2s. Enjoy!
