Earlier today Clive was aerating the nest when he got distracted by something overhead. Clive doing his duty went to the side branch to investigate but he left a hole in the nest. Later when Connie is back on the nest Connick has been following her around for shade. Unfortunately at one point Connick gets clipped by Connie by accident and falls backward into the hole. For 33 minutes Connick battles to get up as Connie sits with Connick. There is not much a parent can do to help without hurting the eaglet with its beak or talons trying to get them out. Connick eventually gets out and runs to safety under Connie. Connie later fills the hole up with nesting It is interesting that I at least realize why the bowl is filled up once the eaglet gets bigger. I watched the same thing happen just last week at another nest. So easy for them to tumble into the hole and not be able to get up. ✿ CE9 was named on January 26th, 2023 Connick by Lori. Connick was named after Connor and Nick from Window of Wildlife for all their dedication to bringing the nest and cams back to Captiva after Hurricane Ian. A contest was held and this was the name chosen. The nest is on private property and not accessible to the public. ✿ Connie is the resident female eagle and I estimated her to be 19/20 years old as of 2023 but could be older ✿ Clive is the resident male eagle and I estimate him to be 6/7 years old as of 2023 based on his plumage when he arrived and his inexperience but that is only a guess 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐬𝐭: 𝐍𝐨 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐬 𝐀𝐭 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐭 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞 The Resident Female Eagle (Connie) and her former mate (Joe) first showed up in 2009 and took over the nest which used to be an osprey nest. Between her and her former mate, the nest has been successful in fledging numerous eaglets. The two eagles that were at this nest in 2009 were still there when the property was bought in 2017. The New property owners named the eagles Connie and Joe after her parents. Based on the eagles being observed at this nest in 2009 they would of had to have been 5 years old already. That would make both of them 13/14 years old in 2017. Over the 3 years before the cams went live Connie and Joe hatched 2 eaglets each year. 2017-2018 2 Hatched - 2 Fledged 2018-2019 2 Hatched - 1 Fledged 2019-2020 2 Hatched - 2 Fledged 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐬 𝐆𝐨 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐈𝐧 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟎-𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟏 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧 Tragedy struck the nest in early 2021 when both eaglets passed away from rodenticide and her long-time mate Joe got into a territorial battle. Joe was injured in the battle and disappeared after. As to what became of him, we do not know. Since Joe's disappearance, two male eagles have won Connie's attention. 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧: The first male was Martin who came after Joe's disappearance and returned with Connie for the 2021-2022 nesting season. Unfortunately, Martin was challenged shortly after their return by another male eagle and lost out to that Eagle. We can only hope Martin left the area and was not killed in the battle. 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞: The second male was the winner of the battle with Martin and was eventually named Clive. Though it took a bit, he finally won Connie's heart and is now the Resident Male at the nest. Their first season together (2021-2022) was unsuccessful even though two eggs were laid. Speculation was that the eggs were not fertilized due to the short time Connie and Clive had together before the eggs were laid. ✿ Links to the live Cams can be found at Windows to Wildlife YouTube Channel: / @windowtowildlife ✿ Windows to Wildlife has partnered with the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW): http://www.crowclinic.org/ You can Help support CROW cause at: http://www.crowclinic.org/donate/dona...
