Welcome to Atop the Fourth Wall, where bad comics burn. In this episode, Linkara looks at one of the original Star Trek: The Next Generation comics! ...And it's Christmas on the Enterprise-D! http://atopthefourthwall.com Originally uploaded December 16th, 2013. ORIGINAL INFO: Reviewing Star Trek totally in rhyme? What a thought! Oh dear lord, what has this comic wrought… RUMINATIONS: Both this and the episode after came about thanks to Spoony. He will often post up random comic pages and panels he’s found, usually under a theme. His most popular are “The Many Concussions of Hal Jordan” and “It’s Simple, We Kill the Batman,” but occasionally he’ll find just other weird-ass stuff, which is the case here. He posted up images of a Star Trek: The Next Generation comic wherein the crew of the Enterprise-D fought the Grinch in order to help a phantasmagorical Santa. It’s pretty trippy and bizarre that this comic was ever made at all. A critique my parents had had for a while for several episodes of the show was that I needed to do something different to shake things up, so when an opportunity to do a review entirely in rhyme came up, particularly due to the Seussian connection, I jumped at the chance. Thanks to the internet (in particular thesaurus sites), I was able to come up with some half-decent rhymes here and there. It’s not all perfect, of course, but that’s what happens when you’ve only got a week to put stuff together. The season 1/2 TNG uniform I had acquired on eBay pretty much because it was cheap and it looked like it would fit. It DOES fit, but like the uniforms it’s based on, it’s uncomfortable as all hell. It might be better if I lost some weight, but it’s still pretty tight and confining, and one-piece jumpsuits are not supposed to be tight and confining. Reaction to the episode was mixed, with some people loving the rhymes while others saying they grew sick of it, but I’m still glad I did it and there was no better comic TO do it. One final note is that if you saw the original episode, this is one case where I removed the midroll commercial bumper (which was also in rhyme). It was promoting the Harvey Finevoice Christmas album, and while that album still exists, I’m really not keen on promoting it all that much, since even back then I was iffy on it due to how rushed it was to try to get it out before Christmas the year before. I suppose I should have made an effort to release a refined version, but for now, best to just leave it be.
