More training is not better. Better more efficient training with measurable information is better! Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test (CPET) is a non-invasive exercise stress test that assesses heart and lung function in real-time during exercise. Your heart and lungs work together to deliver oxygen to your working muscles where it is used to make energy; and to remove carbon dioxide from the body. CPET measures the amount of oxygen your body is using, the amount of carbon dioxide it is producing, your breathing pattern, and electrocardiogram (EKG) while you are riding a stationary bicycle. During CPET you will obtain a pulmonary function test, maximum voluntary ventilation test and a bike exercise stress test. After this data is collected, the information undergoes expert analysis in a data center where exercise capacity is quantified, and the mechanism of patient symptoms is prioritized. This is a much more detailed level of insight and feedback than a traditional treadmill stress test. This test will allow you to determine your VO2 max, determine what risk factors are present and correctable and provide you a strategy to improve. What is a VO2 max and why is it important you ask? Your VO2 max is a representation of how much oxygen your body uses at maximum effort. Its used to determine the aerobic endurance or cardiovascular fitness of an athlete. It’s important to know because if you’re interested in INCREASING your performance, this establishes your baseline and can be improved. As your cardiorespiratory fitness improves, so does your lactate threshold and this is achieved through focused training and exercise. Think of the VO2 max as the one rep max for your heart and lung health.
