As technology companies offshore entry level jobs, urban revitalization strategist Majora Carter shows how the resources they seek might be around the corner. In this talk, she demonstrates how her company is connecting talented individuals from low-status communities with jobs located within their neighborhood. It is a B2B configuration that circumvents hiring biases, builds on-the-job skills and creates local economic development. Majora is a Bronx High School of Science graduate, Wesleyan University Distinguished Alumna, MacArthur ‘genius’ Fellow, Peabody Award winning broadcaster, and her TEDtalk launched TED.com in 2006. Her latest project, StartUp Box uses unusual methods to drive technology jobs and careers into unlikely places. Majora Carter is an urban revitalization strategy consultant, real estate developer, and Peabody Award winning broadcaster. After establishing Sustainable South Bronx and Green For All (among other organizations) to carry on that work, she built on this foundation with innovative ventures and insights into urban economic developments designed to help move Americans out of poverty. Her long list of awards and honorary degrees include accolades from groups as diverse as Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation, John Podesta’s Center for American Progress, and Goldman Sachs. Majora is a Board Member of the US Green Building Council, and the Andrew Goodman Foundation. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
