Baroreceptors, located in the carotid sinus and aortic arch, are stretch-sensitive mechanoreceptors that detect changes in blood pressure. When blood pressure rises, baroreceptors increase their firing rate, sending signals via the glossopharyngeal and vagus nerves to the cardiovascular centers in the medulla oblongata. This triggers a parasympathetic response, leading to vasodilation and decreased heart rate to lower blood pressure. Conversely, a decrease in blood pressure reduces baroreceptor activity, prompting a sympathetic response to increase heart rate and vasoconstriction, raising blood pressure. Chemoreceptors, located in the carotid bodies and aortic bodies, detect changes in blood oxygen, carbon dioxide, and pH levels. They respond primarily to hypoxia (low oxygen levels) by stimulating the respiratory centers in the brainstem, increasing respiratory rate and depth to enhance oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide exhalation. These receptors play a critical role in maintaining homeostasis, ensuring adequate tissue perfusion and gas exchange. #Baroreceptors #Chemoreceptors #CardiovascularPhysiology #RespiratoryPhysiology #FMGE #NEETPG #USMLE #MedicalStudents #BloodPressure #OxygenSensing #MedEd #StudyMedicine #HealthScience #MedicalExams #FutureDoctors #Homeostasis #VagusNerve #GlossopharyngealNerve #HeartRate #LearnMedicine
