Suzuki Vitara (Escudo) First Generation At the end of the 80s, in 1988, Suzuki launched the Vitara; heralding a new era and a vehicle which would hook a new customer base into the brand. The Vitara, as we know it in the UK, is sometimes called the Escudo in parts of Asia and the Sidekick or Santana in North America and south America respectively. The car was badged as a Mini SUV and whilst I talk later on in the video about these only being offered with a 1.6 fuel injected engine on the 4U special edition, if you look worldwide they were sold with a variety of petrol and diesel engines. The petrol engines were from 1.3 up to a 2.5 and the diesel 1.9 or 2 litre. The transmission on this, as it’s a 4U is a 5 speed manual - which the brochure advertises as the only option available - however, a bit of brochure reading from across the globe tells me that there were other transmission options fitted to these including a 4 speed auto and for early cars, a 3 speed auto box which was used until the very 90s in some markets. These were sold worldwide and were a hit in every market they went into, which really helped Suzuki build their brand identity and a loyal lifetime customer fan base. Concentrating on the buyers market I live in, the United Kingdom, there were two body kits you could go for if the standard Vitara wasn’t enough for you. There was the wide boy and the fat boy - a bit of digging online reveals these are the most expensive, predictably I suppose, of the models if you’re looking to buy one of these. The example we’re testing today is a 4U special edition - not to be confused with the 4U squared, which comes out later on for second gen. The 4U came in two colours: miami blue or true green metallic. The extras if you went for this special edition were as follows: A silver overfender kit A stereo radio cassette And the choice of a soft top or an estate - this is classed as the estate - but more commonly known as the hard top Brakes on this are vented discs to front and drums to rear and as you’d expect, it’s got power steering. You’ve also got air con, which sort of makes up for the fact you’re missing out on the soft top. Top speed isn’t quoted but a quick whizz on the motorway has proven the car is more than happy to get up to 70 miles per hour without being flogged to achieve it - so you can’t ask for more really.
