Exceptional atmospheric conditions generated by the cold front currently impacting the Colombian Caribbean coast have resulted in abnormal swells in the coastal area of the city, causing localized damage to the new Playa Blanca pier. According to the technical assessment, the pier has been impacted by waves exceeding three meters in height. As a direct consequence of this unusual increase in wave activity, some elements of the platform have become detached, preventing its proper use. The adverse maritime conditions in Santa Marta, resulting from intense rains and a marked phenomenon of swell, have caused serious damage in the township of Taganga, where fishermen and boatmen face an emergency that threatens their main source of livelihood. Since early Monday morning, strong waves have caused several boats to capsize and sink. Some were washed ashore, while others remain out at sea with no possibility of recovery due to the rough seas, increasing the risk of total loss. On Monday night, a ship that was anchored was dragged by strong waves and ran aground on the shore of Los Cocos beach , one of the city's most popular tourist areas. In several videos captured by local residents , crew members can be seen inspecting the stern of the ship, apparently assessing potential damage. Flooding and overflowing canals have also been reported in neighborhoods such as San Fernando, Colinas del Río, Timayui, Zarabanda, Tayrona and sectors of Gaira , especially Vista al Mar , where dozens of families have suffered water entering their homes , loss of belongings and material damage. The death of a visitor at sea after ignoring restrictions prompted authorities to intensify preventative controls in the area, while warnings persist for hazardous weather conditions in the Gulf of Morrosquillo. A tragedy struck the beaches of Coveñas, in Sucre, on Sunday, February 1, when a 20-year-old tourist died after entering the sea despite the restriction imposed by the authorities due to adverse weather conditions. #stormsurge #tsunami #hightides
