Tucson Daily Citizen weather forecast for September 15, 1958, and the following day: "75°, wind, clouds, but no rain...variable cloudiness through tomorrow with wind at times." Hikers on the way to Mt. Wrightson (often called Mt. Baldy) via the Old Baldy trail will see a memorial sign at Josephine Saddle, about half way to the peak. This is the true story of the events that occurred on November 15, 1958, when an unforecasted snowstorm swept through Arizona and led to the death of the three Boy Scouts whose names are on the memorial, Mike Early (16), Michael LaNoue (13), and David Greenberg (12), and the near deaths of three others, Lou Burgess (16), Ralph Coltrin (12) and Ronnie Sepulveda (11). Ralph's sister, Cathy Hufault, wrote a moving book, "Death Clouds on Mt. Baldy" which is recommended reading if you're interested in a fuller story. Like all the boys, family members, searchers, and many others, she was greatly affected by the tragedy. Cathy's deep research for the book and Ralph's willingness to hike there again and again in the years since that terrible day is a legacy that ensures that the Scouts and what they endured will always be remembered. The initially chaotic search for the boys, who were missing in nearly 7’ of snow dumped by a rogue storm, led to the establishment of the Southern Arizona Rescue Association (SARA). Michael LaNoue’s father was one of the charter members, as were many of the volunteers who had searched for the three missing boys. SARA has gone on to help in the rescues of thousands of people since 1958. https://sarci.org/sara/ Pause and Remember Mount Baldy
