Talk at the 7th "Swiss Hernia Days" in Basel, October 2024 (https://swissherniadays.com/7th-swiss.... Book: https://www.penguin.de/buecher/philip... In the age of digital media, we are confronted with lies, fake news, pseudoscience and conspiracy theories: bullshit is everywhere. The term stands for everything that is false, misleading or simply nonsense. However, there is a narrower sense of "bullshit" highlighted by the philosopher Harry Frankfurt, who focused on the production (the speech act) of bullshitting rather than its product (the content of an utterance). The bullshitter utters words without caring for the truth. Together with the liar and the fool, the bullshitter increases misinformation, especially on social networks, putting our democracy in danger. The philosopher Philipp Huebl explains to what extent tribal behavior and uncritical thinking make us susceptible to bullshit and why we should care about the truth. He also shows us how we can develop critical thinking through self-knowledge in order to be protected against misinformation and manipulation. Bullshit resistance is a cardinal virtue for the 21st century. References (selection) Frankfurt, Harry (2005) On Bullshit. Princeton (NJ): Princeton University Press Grinberg, Nir et al.
