The Roden kit is a very good basis for creating an Albatros D.II early variant. The main adjustment between the D.I and D.II variants was the lowering of the upper wing in the D.II version due to complaints by pilots that its height impaired forward and upward vision. Consequently, the top wing was lowered by 14" and adopting what became the standard cabane struts associated with the D.III and D.V versions. The later D.II dispensed with the side-mounted Windhoff radiators due to concerns about them being easily damaged during fighting, resulting in the engine potentially siezing up, and installed an airfoil Teeves und Braun radiator in the central area of the top wing instead; this ultimately had to be moved as well due to concerns about the pilot being injured by scalding hot water if the radiator was damaged. Therefore, it was relocated by off-setting it to the right side of the upper central area of the wing. The image available to view online shows this aircraft from the left side when it was parked on a rather muddy and waterlogged airfield. Unfortunately, the unit and the pilot remain unknown at present. The likelihood is that the aircraft was based in northern France, probably at some point during 1916. The aircraft had the Imperial War Ensign on each side of the fuselage, but this appears to have had the thin black outline of the Nordic cross and the circular outline to the imperial eagle in the centre of the emblem removed. The damage to the engine parts included in my kit was remedied by scratch-building, and the main undercarriage legs and cabane struts - while nicely moulded by Roden - seemed to me to be rather frail and as a result, the Albatros D.III (wrongly described in the video as D.V) white metal accessory set from Scale Aircraft Conversions was used to replaced these delicate parts. The interplane struts included in the model are sufficiently strong to be used, although they do require to be shortened to accommodate the scale reduction of the top wing to accurately reflect this feature of the real aircraft. ___________ All materials used in the completion of this model were purchased using my own funds, and I have not been sponsored to to undertake this work. ___________ All music tracks included in this video are from Epidemic Sound, and are: We All Die Young - Hampus Naeselius Alteration - Karoliina Gabel & Christoffer Moe Ditlevsen Beyond Rivers & Dust - Alec Slayne Conspiracy Inc - Alex Slayne Atomic Numbers - August Wilhelmsson Majestica - Edgar Hopp Machina Soldier - Rachel Sandy Holding On To Hope - Megan Wofford Chariots - Gavin Luke Beyond The Western Horizon - Howard Harper-Barnes Heroes Hand 2 - August Wilhelmsson Legions - Jo Wandrini Nevertheless She Persisted - Bonnie Grace Phoenix Rising - Edgar Hopp Impulse - Hampus Naeselius Recent - Alex Slayne Warped By Light - Jay Varton Truce No More - Dream Cave Protocol - Robert Ruth Ragnarok - Edgar Hopp This video was made using Capcut.
