Language Survival in the Home 33-Week Community Learning ProjectLed by: Ḵamina̱wadzi Pewi AlfredFeaturing: Two Language Warriors and a Fluent Kwak̓wala (Bak̓wa̱mk̓ala) Speaker Introduction This project is a community-based effort to support Kwak̓wala language survival in the home. Over the course of 33 weeks, families will engage with weekly language lessons designed around everyday themes like daily conversations, introductions, questions and answers, meal times, chores, emotions, games, and more. Instead of QR codes, families will receive private video links to an unlisted YouTube page where a fluent Elder models Kwak̓wala pronunciation and phrases. The two language warriors and the fluent Kwak̓wala speaker will guide learners through these lessons, providing examples and encouraging repetition. Families will be encouraged to practice and record themselves using the language in natural settings at home, creating a safe and joyful learning environment that fosters confidence and fluency. By regularly engaging with the language alongside fluent speakers and language warriors, learners will build a strong foundation to help keep Kwak̓wala alive in our homes and communities. Project Overview Goal:To help families begin speaking Kwak̓wala naturally in their daily lives, through consistent weekly lessons, practice, and reflective video sharing. Project Length:A 3-month pilot project (approximately 33 weeks of lessons), with weekly submissions and an end-of-project review with Elders. Participants:Moms, dads, grandparents, youth, babies, aunties, uncles, cousins — all family members are invited to participate together. How the Project Works Each week, families receive a language survival booklet focused on a specific theme. Accompanying videos from fluent Elders demonstrate pronunciation and usage. Families repeat phrases, practice at home, and record short videos showing their progress. Videos are submitted privately for review, encouraging a supportive, family-centered learning environment. Participation is encouraged with potential incentives for consistent engagement and completion. Background Over the past 20 years, Kwak̓wala words and phrases have been collected from fluent speakers but have not been fully activated in a home-learning context. This project brings that knowledge into family life, making language learning accessible, manageable, and fun. It builds on the understanding that language revitalization happens best when it is a living, communal practice rooted in daily life. Support and Resources A themed booklet of Kwak̓wala survival phrases Private YouTube videos featuring fluent Elders Weekly guidance and encouragement from language warriors and fluent speakers Community check-ins and evaluation with Elders after the pilot Promotion through social media and community networks Next Steps Families interested in participating can register by contacting the project lead. Upon registration, households will receive the booklet, video links, and detailed instructions for the challenge. This project honors our ancestors by keeping Kwak̓wala alive in our homes, one word and one conversation at a time.
