I spent several days camping alone the Arctic wilderness in extreme -34° Celsius with a homemade pulk (sled). Building a bushcraft snow shelter called a quinzee to sleep in. I hacked my way through 60cm of ice to catch fish... nearly froze my toes off and cooking in these Northern Norway temperatures was almost impossible. I was woken up at night to the sound of the ice cracking and the ground vibrating under me. My cooker froze and I had no warm food for 2 days. It was an amazing extreme weather experience but I skipped my last night in the snow shelter. Those low temperatures made life seriously difficult for me. On the last night at the Finnmarksvidda (Máze area) I fired up our trailer Sauna to about +95° Celsius to defrost myself and to lift my mood. A quinzee is called in finnish Lumikammi, we got told by the reindeer herder visiting. We edited a raw version of: How we build the snow shelter / quinzee. Just click here: • Building and living in a snow shelter... Q&A (Questions I was asked) How long does the snow have to settle for a Quinzee? Usually 2 hours, depending on the snow. I shoveled the snow pile the night before. What is your sleeping set up at so low temperatures? I used a foam mat to keep me from the snow, a thermarest mat to insulate and two cold weather sleeping bags. I also slept with all my clothes on. How many air holes did you made into the roof? I had 4 air vents in the side of the roof, each about 6 cm wide. VERY IMPORTANT TO DO SO! How did you kept your food unfrozen? I had most of my food in a plastic bag and I kept it in the sleeping bag at day & night. That helped really a lot. Same I did with extra battery packs and phone. #bushcraft #quinzee #northandbeyond _______ FOLLOW & SUPPORT US: Get updates from our current adventure on Instagram: / north_and_beyond Support the next North & Beyond episodes on Patreon: / northandbeyond _______ WHAT IS NORTH & BEYOND?
