Our series spotlighting the exterior and interior artwork of the Doc Savage pulp magazines continues in this video. This time, we take a look at the artwork found in and on the 1939 issues of the magazine's run. The long run of cover artist Emery Clarke continues. A freelance artist who contributed to a wide range of pulp genres, including sports, detective, romance, and adventure fiction, Clarke contributed nearly 70 covers to the Street & Smith's hero pulp. But what about the interior art? That was left to the master, Paul Orban, who supplied all the interior illustrations during 1939. Born in Budapest, Orban illustrated virtually every issue of DOC SAVAGE during the original pulp run, other than a few scant issues during the 1940s. He also served as the interior illustrator for THE AVENGER, which shared the Street & Smith "house name" of "Kenneth Robeson" used for the Doc Savage novels.
