THE LIFE OF THE MAHASIDDHA TILOPA

The mahasiddha Tilopa (born Dyotita Prabha) was a Bengali mystic whose adventurous life and skillful meditation made him one of the foremost authorities in the history of Buddhism. The honorific title "maha siddha" translates as "great sage", while "Tilopa" (sesame man) is a nickname he was given as he pounded sesame seeds for a living. He met the best teachers living in the Indian subcontinent in the 11th century, and went on to articulate and formalize the Mahamudra teachings of ancient India. He then passed on his knowledge to several disciples, with Naropa being the most influential one. Tilopa and his disciples laid the foundations of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism.
