In this video, we’ll show you and your child how to do a crab walk. Crab walks are excellent exercises for sensory diets to help your child with regulation, body awareness, and strength! Crab walks are powerful “heavy work” exercises that provide proprioceptive input, which builds body awareness as well as offering calming and/or alerting input to the body, that can help children regulate throughout their days. Weight bearing through the limbs while holding the middle part of the body up, targets core strength and activates our body awareness receptors (proprioceptors). Have your child sit down on the ground, put their feet and hands down on the floor, and then lift their bottom up towards the sky. Try to walk forwards, backwards, or to the side - just like a crab! Be mindful if your child is dropping their bottom to the floor. Take breaks to ensure that your child’s form looks like the video above. For other ideas on sensory diet and movement activities, check out the rest of our MoveAbout Activity Card playlist: https://bit.ly/2WAwftG To purchase the MoveAbout Activity Cards, click this link: https://rb.gy/ecqolg The MoveAbout channel is made by a group of paediatric occupational therapists who are passionate about having fun and promoting children’s physical and emotional development through sensory-based, play-based, and relationship-based activities. Our channel has tons of videos with great activity ideas and information for parents, caregivers, teachers, and other therapists! These videos are intended for parents, occupational therapists, educators and other health professionals to help get your child moving and regulated! They are intended to be done with adult supervision and participation in order to ensure correct alignment and form of the child. We also acknowledge that every child and environment is unique, so we would like to emphasize that these videos are not a stand alone occupational therapy program. A sensory diet is a tool that is best used with supervision from a trained occupational therapist or occupational therapist assistant. If you have concerns regarding your child’s motor, cognitive, emotional and/or sensory development, please consult your child’s doctor or allied health professional.
