ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- A new option is on the table for men with prostate troubles who want relief while avoiding invasive surgery. Ron Schienman, 72, said his experience with UroLift improved his quality of life. "Well, I was getting up three or four times a night, maybe more frequently than that to go to the bathroom," Schienman said. He was diagnosed with an enlarged prostate and proved a good candidate for the minimally invasive UroLift procedure. "Basically what it does is compress either side of the prostate and it opens up a channel for the urine to flow easier through there," Dr. Brian Cohen with Victoria Urological Associates said. The procedure itself doesn't take long. Typically, a patient is pre-medicated about an hour ahead of time, then the procedure itself takes about 15 minutes. The data shows that by two weeks, men typically notice a significant improvement in their symptoms and it continues to improve out to 3 months. "I could urinate more freely; there was not this feeling of obstruction," Schienman said. There is no need -- at least for now -- for Schienman to undergo an invasive surgery. _______________ Follow WLOS on social media: WLOS ABC 13 News on Facebook: / news13 WLOS ABC 13 News on Twitter: / wlos_13 WLOS ABC 13 News on Instagram: / wlos_13 Subscribe to WLOS on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/ABC13Cha...
