July 19, 2025 2:02pm Union Pacific Railroad manifest freight train southbound on the UP Fresno Sub passes through the Calvine Road railroad crossing in Elk Grove, California. The dead WCH mechanical bell here hasn't been replaced after years of not ringing. This is likely due to the close pedestrian signal having a bell and UP could save a replacement due to that bell practically providing the sound for this side. Lately, UP and even in my local area transit SACRT has been letting bells die or go quiet if there are more than two bells or at least two functioning bells at crossings. I miss the days when a dead bell would still get replaced so all written down bell signals have a functioning bell unless there is an extra on the same signal that doesn't ring. I pinpointed when this crossing was last rebuilt. This current setup was built between 1999 - 2000. In this time frame, UP was well into the ownership acquiring SP and at this time, crossing equipment was from Harmon with Cantilevers and using Harmon Dotted LEDs and WCH Aurora Clear LEDs with WCH, GS Type 1s, & Safetran Type 1 E-Bells. However, this crossing in that late 90s early 2000s time frame was built with SP equipment with all lights being Incandescent and 4 WCH Mechanical Bells which is interesting as to why UP for this one crossing when at the time these signals were first installed here, why they would use SP at the time stock new equipment except the cantilevers body themselves at the time.
