(17 Feb 2000) Voice and effects Greek K-FOR soldiers have been called into the northern side of Mitrovica in combat vehicles to provide extra security in the Serb-controlled area of the city. Residents say the recent surge in violence in the northern Kosovo town underscores the need for more U-N police in the province. The violence has also set back U-N efforts to better care for minorities, who've been the target of attacks by Kosovo's ethnic Albanian majority. 0:02 Kosovo's most ethnically divided city has been wracked by renewed violence for a fortnight .....ever since a grenade attack on a U-N bus earlier this month killed two elderly Serbs. 0:12 K-FOR peacekeeping troops carry out routine searches as residents pass from the Serb-majority north side of the city to the ethnic Albanian southern part. 0:24 Security has been stepped up to combat the latest surge in violence. 0:29 Dozens of U-N police have now been redeployed from other cities in the province to Mitrovica. Kosovo's minorities - Serbs and Romanies have had their homes destroyed and live in fear of physical attacks. 0:42 They've been forced to live in separate enclaves from the ethnic Albanian majority and heavily guarded by NATO peacekeepers. 0:50 For their part, Albanian residents in the Serb dominated north are also suffering. Many of those ethnic Albanians are still fleeing the area with stories of threats and looting. 1:01 SOUNDBITE: (Albanian) "This is what is left of my possessions. Monday morning French troops entered my house and arrested me. Last night they released me. My house was looted in the meantime and this is all I have left." SUPER CAPTION: Zeqir Pershuku, Mitrovica Resident 01:14 Yet another 100 U-N officers are expected to arrive in the northern part of town by the end of February.
