Jail Canyon - an off-road adventure to the ruins of the Corona Mine!

From the east to the west, Death Valley National Park is honeycombed with hundreds of abandoned mines and hundreds of stories. Some of the best preserved mines are found along the western border of the park in the Panamint Mountains. While some of these ruins are only accessible by a four wheel drive and a strenuous hike (Surprise Canyon), Jail Canyon showcases some well preserved ruins with only a limited hike, but an advanced off-road adventure. For those that have a four wheel drive vehicle, the route up Jail Canyon is a difficult - but enjoyable drive which has the payoff of the accessible and well-preserved ruins of the Corona Mine and Mill (founded 1899; abandoned in the 1980's). And for those that are willing to explore more on foot, the area has other hidden treasures. Parties without a four wheel drive vehicle, however, should not attempt the drive, as the route is not a road, and not passable to standard drive cars.
