Rubyfruit Jungle: Pomegranates Split Open Automatically When Ripe Pomegranates split open on the tree, when the the fruits are ready to be eaten--whether by birds or humans. The fruits look a bit like they are laughing; with mouths full of red seed-teeth! Pomegranates also remind me of jewel-encrusted Fabergé eggs. The seeds, or "arils", are like beautiful red rubies--full of tangy juice and, apparently, very rich in antioxidants said to be beneficial to health. The trees can live for about seventy-five years, and are quite drought-hardy once established. Pomegranates also make quite attractive ornamentals, with their pretty bright red blossoms in early summer. Very beautiful edible landscaping species, indeed! ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
