Corn Tortillas with a Cast Iron Tortilla Press

Making homemade corn tortillas, using a tortilla press and a vintage cast iron skillet. Making flour tortillas was a lot of fun, and the resulting tortillas were far more delicious than typical store-bought tortillas; and so, we tried our hand at making corn tortillas. We found that a tortilla press is a must-have for making corn tortillas! The press didn't work with flour tortillas because the gluten in the flour caused them to shrink and contract after being pressed out. However, with corn tortillas this wasn't a problem. The trickiest part of this was making sure the dough was wet enough, because if the dough was too dry the tortillas would crack and fall apart. In the end, it was very easy to make corn tortillas. Especially if you've grown up eating corn tortillas, you'll find that making these yourself produce some tortillas that are tasty, savory, and something to be proud of...as well as delicious!
