THE RED ARMY ENSEMBLE Volume 2 Conductor: Colonel Boris Alexandrov SIDE ONE Band 1 - La Marseillaise Claude-Joseph Rouget de Lisle (1760-1836) wrote both words and music of the world-famous national anthem of France on the night of April 24, 1792. It is believed that this melody, used as a marching song, was a contributing factor in the success of the French Revolution through its call to arms in spirit all men that resist the hand of tyranny. Band 2 - Soviet Hymn Alexander Alexandrov (1883-1946), founder of the Red Army Ensemble and father of its present Artistic Director, composed this stirring hymn, adopted as the Soviet national hymn in 1944. Band 3 - La Variague. Soloist: Konstantin Gerasimov This Russian sailors' song by A. Alexandrov and Lakobvsky praises the heroic crew of the cruiser Variague during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05. Surrounded by six enemy cruisers and eight torpedo boats, Captain Rudnyev rejected the enemy's demand to surrender, and sailed forward to unequal battle. When every possibility of resistance was exhausted, the Russians scuttled their battle-scarred vessel rather than give it up, and went down with the ship. Band 4 - Stenka Razin (Russian Folk Song). Soloist: Alexej Sergeyev Along the Volga sails the ship of Stenka Razin, half-legendary chieftain and leader of the Cossack resistance against the Russians in the middle of the 17th century. Razin's new bride, a Persian princess, is on board, and his warrior crew accuse him of deserting them for a softer life. To prove his loyalty, Razin casts his bride overboard and invites his men to sing and dance. Band 5 - Under the Oak Tree (Russian Folk Song). Soloist: Alexej Sergeyev Another famous Russian folk song, this time in rousing hopak tempo—a half-nonsensical invitation to the carefree pleasures of dancing. SIDE TWO Band 1 - Song of Russia. Soloist: Konstantin Gerasimov With music by Col. Boris Alexandrov and poem by Kamenetsky, this expansive melody praises the very extremes of the motherland: "Beautiful when I am happy, austere when I am sad, I love you, my Russia." Band 2 - The sun goes down behind the mountain This song by Koralenkov and Blanter voices the emotions of Soviet soldiers returning home after fighting for the freedom of their homeland. In 'patrol' style, the drumming of horses' hooves is heard advancing and passing on over the horizon. Band 3 - Song of the Prisoner (Russian Folk Song). Soloist: Nicolai Abramov Another folk ballad, of more recent times, in the great Russian tradition of a cappella choral singing. A young revolutionary is imprisoned, and tries to escape. "Sloiashal!—Who goes there?" cry the sentinels. The prisoner has got through the stockade when a shot rings out. "Who goes there?" But the prisoner lies dead, and the sentinels' cries echo in the distance. Band 4 - On the banks of a river (Russian Folk Song). Soloist: Nicolai Greese "As I walk beside a swift river, I rest on the green bank and look out over the expanses of rich black earth and broad streams. I will protect my place of birth, my Russian land, as long as I live."
