A new £5.2million flagship Mole Avon store has been opened in Crediton with help from the Maglewurzels to get cider flowing. Shareholders and guests were treated to a special open event on Thursday September 6 before the store on Well Parks opened to public on Friday 7. At the event Kenniford Pig Van and Sandford Orchards provided the food and drink while the Manglewurzels entertained. At 9:00pm members of staff and visitors had a surprise when the Exeter Pipes and Drums made a surprise appearance. John Lee, Mole Avon chairman said: “We wanted a few surprises we thought we would have something jolly and lively and very emotional as that's the way it feels for a lot of us. Seeing our staff in their orange top welcome in the pipes and drums was a fantastic site to see.” The company has been on its Mill Street site since it was founded in the early 1970’s and has been eager to move to a suitable local site that enables it to serve its traditional farmer base alongside the wider community. Mr Lee added: “It's taken us a long time to find a new site so tonight there's been a real start of a new journey for our customers at the end of a very long planning and building process. “Our core customers, our agriculture and rural customers can see an expanded range on offer but I think the rest of our customers can see a direct link between Crediton town and this store.” As well as expanding to the new 3.25-acre site, the store also employs 49 members of staff compared to 21 at its former premises. The company is also looking to futureproof its operation by purchasing another acre of land. Mike Haines, Managing Director of Mole Avon added: “It's been 11 years in the planning and nine months to get it out of the ground. “Because of the nature of the site being on a flood plain there was a lot of underground work that had to be done first before we could lay the first bricks and then the building went out fairly quickly after that. We've then had a three month internal fitting which has meant that the external building has remained visually the same but internally we've been developing what you can see here this evening. “For us it's very much about retaining the business independence and we believe this is a cornerstone to ensure that happens. It's a changing marketplace everywhere and no different agriculture so we believe this will put us in a good position to go forward and look forward to developing bigger and better things for our customers and promote the Mole Avon business.” Buckingham Palace have also announced that his Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester will formally open the store on Tuesday October 2.
