"You Don't Know What Love Is," composed by Gene de Paul Ron Dewar, tenor saxophone John Campbell, piano Kelly Sill, bass Joel Spencer, drums Recorded live at Mabel's, Champaign, Illinois March 10, 1979 Many of us who knew Ron in Champaign, Illinois liked to say that Ron played the entire history of the tenor sax. Within a short amount of time you might hear a tip o’the cap to Lester Young, a nod to Junior Walker, as well as the extremities of the saxophone sounds that echo Pharoah Sanders and Albert Ayler, plus everything in between. He was above all, a Sonny Rollins man. Ron was 21 years old in 1962 when Rollins released the iconic album “The Bridge”. That album and the subsequent RCA releases must have been a revelation to Ron. Sonny Rollins taught us how to reimagine the Jazz Standards repertoire with reverence, tenderness, and humor. He also gave us license to pummel these tunes into submission if you will, to make them conform to the artist’s vision. Stretch the harmonies and call upon the sweet and brutish sounds that the tenor sax offers for the fearless player. You might call it "tough love" or perhaps "A Terrible Beauty". As always, Ron takes us for a ride. The rhythm section players came of age playing with Ron who was the center of gravity for many in a very creative Jazz community. John, Kelly, and Joel later reunited in Chicago where they worked together often and formed the house rhythm section at Joe Seigel’s Jazz Showcase. Listen to them here with Eddie Jefferson on his final performance. • Eddie Jefferson - Live from the Jazz Showc... -David Feinman This recording, like most of the tracks on this channel, was sourced from a website dedicated to the music of Ron Dewar. https://rondewarjazz.com.
