RSPB Lakenheath Fen Nature Reserve. We Found A Huge Creepy Caterpillar - Goat Moth Caterpillar.

Today's visit was to the RSPB Lakenheath Fen Nature Reserve Suffolk. Another popular reserve that is worth visiting in all seasons. With trails that take you through woodlands, meadows and marshland, you'll always find something of interest, whether it's birds, mammals, insects or plants, you'll not be disappointed. On this visit, we found a very large and somewhat weird looking caterpillar burrowing itself into an ant's nest... it looked to be around 3 inches!! After a bit of googling, we found out it was a Goat Moth Caterpillar. Goat Moth Caterpillars bore into deciduous trees where they can live for up to 5 years when they will then emerge to find a suitable burrow to pupate in! This particular one was burrowing into an ant's nest and the ants were not too happy about it. I hope you've enjoyed this video.
