Values-based Education for Sustainable Development (VbESD): An Introduction

Why hello there! My name is Vicky and I am honoured to introduce to you an educational framework I am building called Values-based Education for Sustainable Development (VbESD). I made this presentation originally for the 2021 Sustainability and Resilience Conference, under the submission "Building a Pedagogical Framework for the Education of Sustainable Development using a Values-based Education Approach". You may find a PDF of the slides here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_Bdi... ----- About the VbESD framework:⁣ ⁣ Values-based Education for Sustainable Development (VbESD) is a new educational framework that applies the principles of Values-based Education (VbE) into the global action of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) — to foster sustainability as an intrinsic value and empower children with the values, attitudes, knowledge and skills they need to be engaged, responsible citizens and leaders that can take on the multifaceted challenges in our global society. ⁣ #climatechange presents an urgent and complex crisis that needs solutions from all levels and societal members, and educators have a very valuable opportunity to play a direct role in the #resiliency of a generation. It is only with #QualityEducation (yes #SDG4!) that the roots of the climate crisis can be tackled and our #SustainableDevelopmentGoals achieved. ⁣ Values lie at the heart of this; they are the principles that guide our thinking and behaviour. While most of us think of values as kindness, respect, honesty, integrity, hope, joy, and gratitude - #sustainability is a value as well. I have written a thesis through my Master in Management of Sustainable Development Goals (MSDG) introducing this framework, stating that in order for #EducationforSustainableDevelopment to be successful, sustainability needs to be nurtured as an #intrinsicvalue within society and its members, and that #valuesbasededucation can be used for exactly that purpose.⁣ ⁣ Through my research, I establish the overwhelming support and willingness to adopt this Values-based Education for Sustainable Development (VbESD) framework, as well as explore what perceived barriers are present and important elements and next steps for the framework.
