I am obsessed with Hallmark movies and I noticed a lot of them talked about Christmas Kringles... This is a dessert I had never heard of so I started doing research. THEN I learned that Trader Joe's sold a few different flavors throughout the year so I got to TRY one! Now I'm obsessed and had to try making my own. HOMEMADE ALMOND KRINGLE Kringle Pastry Dough 1 Tbsp active dry yeast 3/4 C milk – heated 112 f 1/3 C sugar 1 tsp salt 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 egg and 1 yolk slightly beaten 3 C flour 1 C + 2 Tbsp butter 1 egg (for egg wash) 1 Tbsp water Mix the yeast and warm milk (and a tbsp of the sugar) and let the yeast bloom 5-10 mins Add the rest of the sugar, salt, egg and vanilla and mix Add ½ the flour and mix until the dough is smooth Add ½ of the flour again (so 3/4ths in now) and mix until smooth, add the rest of the flour as needed for a thick, but slightly sticky still dough Wrap in plastic wrap and chill for 1 hour or more between 2 sheets of parchment paper use a rolling pin to pound and flatten out the butter – to an 8x16 inch rectangle – mark the half way mark and chill Roll the dough out to a rectangle 8x12 inches place ½ butter (8x8) onto 2/3rds of the dough, fold the 1/3 into the center and fold over again – wrap and chill (you want the dough to stay firm and the butter to stay chilled (3 layers of dough now) Roll out dough again into an 8x12 inch rectangle place the 2nd half of the butter onto 2/3rds again – fold the 1/3 into the center and fold over – wrap and chill (9 layers now) – now is a good time to chill overnight Roll out the dough again to an 8x16 inch rectangle, fold into 3rds – wrap and chill (24 layers now) – this is another good overnight mark Almond filling 1 2/3 C almond flour 1 1/4 Tbsp powdered sugar 1/4 tsp salt 3 egg white (3 oz) 1/2 tsp almond extract 6 Tbsp softened butter In a food processor blend the almond flour, powdered sugar and salt Add the egg whites and extract and pulse until it’s a smooth paste Add the butter and pulse until it’s completely incorporated Refrigerate until ready to use Kringle Assembly Roll the dough out to 18x26 – then cut into two 9x26 strips Spread the filling down the center 1/3 fold 1/3 of the dough over beat the egg and tbsp water to create an egg wash – brush over the remaining 1/3rd and fold over – you want to make sure they overlap by at least 1 inch) press down to make sure it’s sealed shape into an oval on parchment paper making sure the ends overlap by about an inch – open one side and place the other end into it – wrapping it back up to seal let rise for an hour preheat the oven to 350 brush the kringle with more egg wash and bake about 20-25 mins Icing 1 1/2 C powdered sugar 1 tsp vanilla 2 Tbsp melted butter 2 Tbsp milk Mix until smooth (add an extra tsp of milk if needed) Drizzle or brush onto pastry Optional – sprinkle almond slices on top MORE LIVE HOLIDAY FOOD VIDEOS Hot Chocolate Bombs • How to make Hot Chocolate Bombs in any fla... 4 holiday cookies • Four Easy Holiday cookie recipes - LIVE - ... 3 more holiday cookies • More Cookie Recipes - LIVE - Madeleines, D...
