I had to get a feeder on them asap. Because the hive is not perfectly level, I needed a feeder that would not spill or leak into the hive body. The Rapid Bee Feeder Round Hive Top unit seems like a nice design. It will not leak down onto the bees and into the hive no matter what the temperature fluctuations are. Some inverted style feeders constantly drip in or leak when the hive body heats up with the sun. I also added Brood Booster to the 50/50 sugar water so it will last longer while the bees use it. 50/50 sugar water will begin to spoil in a short amount of time without essential oils added. I recommend Honey-B-Healthy, Pro-Health, or Brood Booster which I am currently testing. It may or man not actually "boost brood" there is no science to support that so far. The thoughts about essential oils in bee feed is that "it can't hurt", but not necessarily helpful either. It does preserve sugar water, so that's my motivation here. The swarm I installed was around 3-4 lbs of bees, so they definitely have the numbers to get going before winter arrives. I'll have to monitor them closely and keep the feed coming. The same hive-top feeder can be used for fondant and other dry feeding during winter. I think it's thin and flimsy, but the design is spot on, so I definitely like the practical aspects. Ventilation through the top area is important in my opinion as well as allowing the bees to patrol the entire feeder box to keep out ants, hive beetles and other creepy crawlers that may use that area for safety or as an entrance that is unguarded.
