DIY maintain your BMW at your own risk.    • BMW shut down NewTIS. DIY'ers beware!   During my last BMW i8 oil change, I drained a sample of oil and sent it to Blackstone Laboratories in order to see how the oil was performing. I got the results back in 3 weeks and reviewed them. My oil has been somewhat diluted by fuel, resulting in less viscosity. I typically run 0w30 or 5w30 in this engine and will continue to do so. I feel that the less viscous 0w20 is primarily offered by the manufacturer for fuel savings, but this doesn't protect the engine as well. I also recommend shortened oil change intervals (5000 instead of 10000 miles). Oil is cheaper than an engine and oil analysis is cheap insurance! Get your free oil analysis test kit: https://www.blackstone-labs.com/produ... Also, I decided to replace the drain plug on the bottom of the oil pan with a ValvoMax stainless steel oil drain valve. The BMW i8 takes a M12-1.50 plug and ValvoMax had that size. It came with a crush washer and a quick drain attachment and hose. This will make future oil changes real easy and less messy. It requires a 15/16" or 24mm socket to install it and it should be torqued the same as the stock oil drain plug: 18.4 ft-lbs or 25Nm.
