Today, September 26, I am celebrating TWO birthdays by posting this rare video footage! Ted Greene would have been 72 and George Gershwin 100 years old, his centennial birthday. Here Ted teaches the Gershwin classic “Our Love Is Here To Stay”. Video Credits: Cesar Pineda 02/19/97 Here’s a brief summary of this 42 minute long lesson: 1. Begins in the key of Db (Nat King Cole’s key), sets the tempo at 120 2. Reviews the progression via chord melody, comping, basic root movement – Very cool! 3. The use of 4 note chord inversions, crossing string sets from middle to top – V2 chords! 4. Add upper extensions to the chords – Jazz lives above the 7th! 5. Explores contrary motion between chord changes – A favorite contrapuntal device! 6. Explores changes to the standard progression Assignment: Memorize the changes, both in chord name and number, learn and apply chord inversions of the “V-2” 4 string variety, experiment with upper extensions, pay attention to voice leading and occasionally try to insert some tasteful moving contrary lines between your chords. Last, but not least, work your ‘azz’ off and finish this beautiful tune! Funny! Ted being a big fan of the hit TV series “Columbo” [Peter Falk], he closes this lesson with his ‘Lieutenant Columbo’ impression. I miss you, man!
