Fanny Kaplan was born in 1890 in Volhynia, then part of the Russian Empire, and became a committed member of the Socialist Revolutionary Party. After years of political activity, imprisonment, and partial blindness caused by harsh conditions in Tsarist labor camps, she grew to despise Vladimir Lenin and the Bolsheviks, whom she believed had betrayed the ideals of the Russian Revolution. On August 30, 1918, as Lenin was leaving a Moscow factory, Kaplan fired three shots at him, striking him twice and causing wounds that many historians believe contributed to his later strokes and early death. Immediately arrested, she refused to name accomplices or express regret. Just days later, on September 3, 1918, Fanny Kaplan was executed without trial—taken into the courtyard of the Kremlin arsenal garden, shot by a Cheka officer, and secretly cremated, her remains never recovered. Her role and motives remain debated, but she is remembered as the woman who came closest to ending Lenin’s rule.
