Execution Of Zinaida Portnova - The Teenage Nazi Killer

Zinaida Martynovna Portnova was born on 20 February 1926 in Leningrad, Soviet Union. During the Second World War, she was evacuated to northern Belarus, where she witnessed brutal treatment by occupying German forces, including violence against her family. At just 15 years old, she joined the Soviet underground resistance group “Young Avengers,” becoming one of the youngest partisan fighters of the war. Portnova carried out intelligence gathering, distributed leaflets, sabotaged German supply lines, and took part in armed operations. Her most famous act occurred in 1943, when she poisoned food at a German officers’ mess, killing and sickening dozens of soldiers. Captured later that year, she was interrogated by the Gestapo, severely tortured, and reportedly blinded, yet she refused to betray her comrades. Zinaida Portnova was executed by German forces in 1944 at the age of 17. After the war, she was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union, becoming a lasting symbol of youth resistance, courage, and sacrifice against Nazi occupation.
