So Dotemu/Tribute Games dropped a demo for the upcoming Marvel: Cosmic Invasion today. I normally don't even play demos of games I already know I'm getting, but I really wanted to try this one. It's the follow up to TMNT: Shredder's Revenge, which was an excellent game, and this clearly has a lot of the same DNA. For Cosmic Invasion, they changed the combat to give it a bit of Marvel vs. Capcom flavor, with tags and assists you can do to extend your combos, cover gaps in your attack pattern, help clear the screen when you're getting up from a knockdown, etc. You don't see those mechanics often in beat 'em ups, but it works really well and makes the combat really fun. I spent a couple hours playing this with every character, and they all play a bit differently, and they're all fun to use. My favorites were Wolverine and Phyla-Vell, who plays a bit like a Devil May Cry character. I'm not familiar with her character at all, but I'm getting interested now... The demo is only available on PC right now, and it includes 9 playable characters and the first two (?) stages in Arcade mode, so it gives you a pretty good feel for the game. I think it's super fun and it has the potential to be an all time great beat 'em up, but my only worry is that this demo is really easy. Of course, if it's like TMNT, it will probably have a harder difficulty, and they may even add dip switches to it again to let you crank the difficulty up even further. So I'm not too worried about that aspect of it, but I think it's worth noting. I want a no death clear to be a good challenge, rather than a given after playing it for a couple days. Other than that, everything about the game seems top notch, and it seems like it'll be an instant classic. Give it a shot! (I would have liked a good scoring system too, but those are so rare in beat 'em ups that I don't even take it into consideration tbh) ----- Beat 'em Ups (e.g. Final Fight): • Beat 'em Ups 2D Action (e.g. Metal Slug): • 2D Action STG/Shmups (e.g. Dodonpachi): • STG Replays
