Maria de las Mercedes de Orleans y Borbón ( Palacio Real de Madrid , June 24 of 1860 - June 26 of 1878 ) was Queen consort of Spain, being the wife of King Alfonso XII . She was the sixth of the children of Antonio de Orleans, Duke of Montpensier , son of King Louis-Philippe of France and the Infanta Luisa Fernanda of Bourbon, sister of Isabella II , who then reigned in Spain . She spent her childhood in Seville. During the period of Democratic Presidential term , the Spanish royal family had to go into exile. In December 1874 , the monarchy was restored in Spain with the pronouncement in Sagunto by General Martinez Campos , in favor of Prince Alfonso , son of Isabella II , who was proclaimed king of Spain . Mercedes then returned to Spain , settling with her family in Seville , in the Palacio de San Telmo which had been the family residence. Two years earlier, in 1872 , Mercedes and her cousin Prince Alfonso had begun to fall in love, when she was only 12 years. Despite opposition from Isabella II to the wedding, because the confrontation he had with the Duke of Montpensier, and the government's preference for a marriage with a European princess, were imposed and desires become King Alfonso XII , celebrating the wedding on January 23 of 1878 at Madrid's Atocha Basilica . She was the youngest Queen Consort of Spain, at 17. The marriage was short by the untimely death of Queen Mercedes because of tuberculosis six months later. She died at the Royal Palace of Madrid , two days after her 18th birthday, accompanied throughout by her husband. She was buried in a chapel of the Monastery of El Escorial and was not be in the royal tomb, reserved only for the queens who had offspring. The Queen Mercedes was the driving force of the construction of the Almudena Cathedral in Madrid , whose construction began in 1883 . Her remains were taken to the cathedral on November 8th of 2000 , in compliance with the wish expressed in his day by King Alfonso XII . The social impact that caused the untimely death of Queen Mercedes and the desolation of the king, who left the Court, retreating to Riofrio palace , became popular a tune based on an old Spanish ballad that became a myth love story between Alfonso and Maria de las Mercedes. The real romance was filmed twice, with the films "Where are you, Alfonso XII?" and "What are you sad about?" . It also inspired a song, Romance of Queen Mercedes , composed by Quintero, León and Quiroga and sung by many performers of the genre, such as Concha Piquer , Marifé de Triana , Pastora Soler and Paquita Rico (who played the Queen in the movie Where you, Alfonso XII? ), among others.
