Government College for Women, M.A. Road, Srinagar organised an event to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8 (Saturday). The event was organised by Women’s Study Centre of the college and was attended by students and faculty members at the Lala Arifa auditorium of the campus. Sahitya Akademi Award awardee Kashmiri poet and scholar, Prof. Naseem Shafaie was the Chief Guest, while Prof. Lily Want, former Professor at University of Kashmir, was the Guest of Honour. Other speakers included Dr. Fatima Jalid from NIT Srinagar and Ms. Madeeha Majid, a human rights lawyer and motivational speaker. Principal Prof. (Dr.) Yasmeen Farooq Khan welcomed the guests and highlighted the significance of gender equality in education. She recalled the role of the college in women’s emancipation over the past 75 years and paid tribute to Ms. Mehmooda Ali Shah for her contributions to women's rights, education, and social justice. Prof. Naseem Shafaie recited her poetry, emphasizing women’s struggles and strengths. She quoted Lala Ded and Habba Khatoun, advocating for women's empowerment. Prof. Lily Want stressed the role of parents in dismantling gender stereotypes and teaching boys and girls equal responsibilities from an early age. Ms. Madeeha Majid encouraged women to actively participate in decision-making processes. Dr. Fatima Jalid shared her research journey and emphasized the need for daycare facilities at workplaces for working women. She was featured in the book ‘She Is – 75 Women in Chemistry,’ recognizing top Indian women in the field. Dr. Abina Habib, Coordinator of Women’s Study Centre, highlighted the centre’s work in gender studies and legal rights since its inception in 2007. The event also included the felicitation of star students and female support staff in recognition of their contributions. The program began with a ‘Naat-i-Sharif’ recitation by Masroofa (Semester 2), followed by the ‘Izband’ ceremony and mementos. The Young Women’s Conference was chaired by Midhat Zia Soharwardy (Semester 6). The event concluded with a felicitation ceremony by Principal Prof. Yasmeen Farooq, with a Vote of Thanks presented by Prof. Sheikh Muhammad Irfan.
