David Bahati, the State Minister for Trade, has strongly rejected the results of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries for the Ndorwa West County seat in Kabale District, where he was narrowly defeated by newcomer Eliab Naturinda Mporera. The highly contested primary, whose results were announced in the early hours of Friday morning, saw Naturinda declared the winner with 25,027 votes, while Bahati trailed closely with 23,759 votes. A third candidate, Edward Mwesigwa, garnered a distant 416 votes. Speaking to our reporter on Friday evening, a visibly dissatisfied Bahati alleged widespread electoral malpractices, including voter rigging and intimidation of his polling agents. "This was not a free and fair election," he asserted. "The process was riddled with irregularities that undermined the will of the people. I’m currently consulting with my legal and political team to determine the next course of action. The struggle is far from over." Bahati, who has served as the area Member of Parliament for over a decade, expressed deep gratitude to his supporters for standing by him despite the challenges. “To every voter who cast their ballot in my favor,I do not take your support for granted. I am humbled and thankful,” he said. He also took the opportunity to highlight the progress the constituency has made under his leadership. “During my tenure, we made significant strides in improving healthcare services, upgrading infrastructure, and expanding access to quality education. These achievements speak to our shared vision for a better Ndorwa West,” Bahati noted. The unexpected defeat has sent shockwaves through local political circles, with analysts describing it as one of the most dramatic outcomes in this election cycle. Eliab Naturinda Mporera, a relatively new face in politics, now becomes the NRM flag bearer for Ndorwa West, a development that reshapes the political dynamics ahead of the 2026 general elections.
