Key interlock systems, also known as trapped key interlocking, is a mechanical and electrical means of dictating a safe sequence of activities which may include switching operations and entry into electrical enclosures. Nearly all medium voltage metal-enclosed capacitor banks and harmonic filter banks utilized in North and South America use such a system to prevent out-of-sequence operation of the capacitor bank/harmonic filter bank and entry into the enclosure. Such systems support 0-Harm policies, minimizes risk of arc flash events, and improve the reliability of the equipment. This Tech Talk presented by Paul Steciuk of NEPSI, shows how KEY INTERLOCKS are utilized on a metal-enclosed capacitor banks and harmonic filter banks. The Tech Talk is thorough in all aspects of key interlocking, from lock operation, to lock choices, to sequence of operation, and more.
