Watching the recent Biggest Loser documentary of Netflix got me concerned. As a chartered (sport and) exercise psychologist, the absence of psychology - generally, but also of psychological safety - made me wonder how many of participants' difficulties could have been mitigated both during and after the show. But as a certified personal trainer, I know that the lack of psychological training is something that continues to leave people seeking to intentionally lose weight in precarious positions. If the psychological elements of weight loss remain unaddressed, it's unlikely an individual will successfully be able to lose weight and keep it off. Not everyone needs a psychologist, but those that do risk repeating the same self-sabotage cycles, over and over.
