Lipopolysaccharide endotoxemia may not be the first thing you think of in terms of depression, cognitive decline, anxiety, insomnia, etc, but according to Dr. Carnahan it is one of the biggest factors in our mental health. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a bacteria coating in our gut and it can have a hugely potent inflammatory immune effect when it escapes the gut lumen. Toxins in our environment (such as pollution, mould, infections) and/or in our diets, as well as psychological stressors (including isolation and loneliness), can massively impact the degree of permeability of the cells in the gut, which can lead to leaky gut and the release of bacteria, LPS and food particles into the blood stream. This leads to an immune inflammatory response which in turn releases thousands of cytokines into the body. In particular, the overproduction of the cytokine IL-6 is linked to low mood, depression, insomnia, bipolar and anxiety. Therefore a compromised gut lining is very much linked to our mental health via inflammatory mechanisms.
