This year, the Ghanaian cedi has depreciated by as much as 30%, with the currency being described as among the three worst performing currencies in the world! The depreciation has been accentuated by exogenous (or recent) factors. However, it has to be recognised that depreciation has been a long-standing problem. In fact, since Ghana adopted a flexible exchange rate regime in 1983, the cedi has experienced perennial decline, with only short intermittent periods of stability. Given the degree of depreciation experienced--and which is still ongoing--it will not be far-fetched to say that the cedi faces existential threat, as there appears to be no end in sight. In this video, Dr Kwakye puts the cedi crisis into perspective in terms of its severity and its history. He answers the question of how we as a country have reached this point.
