Benediction Response: Tomorrow (Annie). Charles Strouse This Sunday, June 9 in Worship "Hildegard of Bingen and Creative Spiritual Practice" As we continue our sermon series on the mystics of our Christian tradition this Sunday, we’ll explore the life and ministry of Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179). Hildegard was an abbess, visionary, musical composer, poet-philosopher, and practitioner of natural medicine who has much to teach us about nurturing our connection to God’s good green earth and how our creativity (in all its many forms) can be an integral part of our spiritual practice. Musical Theatre Sunday – Songs of Hope and Inspiration Have you been to a live musical theatre production or watched a musical theatre movie lately? If so, I’m sure that many of the songs with meaningful lyrics and beautiful melodies inspired you in some way. Musicals are a wonderful form of theatrical performance that combines songs, spoken dialogue, acting and dance to move the story forward. We all have our favorite musicals and favorite songs from those musicals, and all for different reasons. Musicals tell a story, taking the characters through an emotional experience which inspires them, and in turn – inspires us to go on. You could say the same about a worship service – songs (hymns, anthems, solos) and dialogue (sermon, prayers) combined to tell the stories of the Biblical characters and events that inspire us to go on. Last spring we had our first Musical Theatre Sunday and as the service was concluding, Pastor Susie asked for it to become a “Tradition!” So, we’re doing it again! We’ll include inspirational and hope-filled songs from a number of Broadway musicals that not only will our Chancel Choir and Section Leader/Soloists be singing, but you, the congregation will be invited to sing along! This year we are including songs from Annie, Carousel, Company, Godspell, Guys and Dolls, Man of La Mancha, Oliver, and The Sound of Music. It’s going to be an exciting and inspirational service, so don’t miss it!
