The current pace of technological and biomedical science is dizzying, pushing us ever closer to a future we imagined only in science fiction. But where are we really? Are technologies like gene editing, cybernetic implants, genetic vaccines, autonomous androids, enhanced senses, and designer genetics really just around the corner? In this presentation, scientist Nathan H. Lents will cover where things currently stand in the science of human enhancement, and what is just around the corner. Nathan H. Lents, Ph.D. is Professor of Biology and Director of the Cell and Molecular Biology program at John Jay College of the City University of New York. He is also a visiting professor of Forensic Science at the University of Lincoln in the UK, and an elected fellow for the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry. Dr. Lents’s research explores the evolution of the human genome in search of human-specific elements that may help explain our unique evolutionary trajectory. He also writes articles in the popular press and is the author of two books: Not So Different: Finding Human Nature in Animals, Human Errors: A Panorama of our Glitches, from Pointless Bones to Broken Genes and the forthcoming Rewinding Sex: Modern Attitudes, Ancient Truths (HarperCollins, 2025).
