Khanyisa’s story is one of incredible perseverance, survival and hope. At just four months old, she was found alone in the bush, trapped in a poacher’s snare. The injuries she sustained were severe, cutting deep into her head, neck and cheeks. Miraculously, she managed to free herself from the snare but wandered for approximately 4 days, dehydrated and in desperate need of help. In January 2020, Khanyisa was rescued and brought into the care of HERD, where she began her healing journey with the dedicated help of our carer team, our founder Adine Roode and Wildlife Vet Dr. Peter Rogers. Her rehabilitation was a long and delicate process, starting with the treatment of her wounds and leading to her gradual emotional recovery. Khanyisa, whose name means “light,” truly began to shine as her health improved, and she was eventually accepted by her new adoptive herd. Her once painful past is now behind her, replaced by a joyful life with her herd. Watching her playful interactions with her elephant family reminds us of the power of love and compassion in healing both physical and emotional wounds. As Khanyisa turns five, we celebrate her growth and transformation into a thriving, joyful young elephant. She has come so far from those early days in the nursery, where she would snuggle into her zebra blanket next to Lammie, her sheep companion. Today, she is learning from her herd and enjoying the simple pleasures of being an elephant. Happy 5th Birthday, Khanyisa! 🐘💖 #everyelephantneedsaherd #elephantorphan #elephantlove #khanyisaturns5
