Our August 7th 2024 Grand Rounds session, Dr. Alexander Simpson helps us explore the critical concepts of cultural competence and cultural safety within the context of forensic mental health care. Gain a deeper understanding of the origins of these terms and the challenges they present in clinical practice. Through a detailed Canadian case study, we will examine practical approaches to addressing these issues at both clinical and service levels. Join us for this insightful discussion on enhancing culturally informed care in forensic mental health settings. Dr. Simpson is a Full Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto and Research Chair in Forensic Psychiatry at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. He has held key roles in numerous forensic organizations globally and serves on the Editorial Board of seven scientific journals. With over 140 peer-reviewed papers, a book, and several chapters, his research focuses on violence and psychotic illness, including its causes, criminal justice pathways, and therapeutic interventions. Dr. Simpson also contributes as an occasional columnist for the Globe and Mail.
