Suburban Walk Series #25, Downtown Bellingham, Washington September 2025 Tour Lying only 20 miles south of the United States and Canadian border, Bellingham, Washington features a population of nearly 95,000 and is designated as the southern terminus of the Alaska Marine Highway. The region was discovered in 1792 by British Explorer George Vancouver and is the ancestral home of several Salish Native American tribes. Vancouver named the settlement after Sir William Bellingham, a British politician and financial controller responsible for procuring provisions for the Vancouver Expedition. European peoples settlement began in the 1850s with several coal mining towns springing up in the region. The town became incorporated during 1903 upon the consolidation of several nearby settlements. Coal mining remained the predominant industry locally during the 19th century with the final mine closing in 1955. During the 1890s, three railroad lines arrived locally accompanied by various additional trade enterprises and industries. The city’s proximity to the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Alaskan Inside Passage aided in retaining cannery operations. The city is situated on Bellingham Bay, which is protected by Lummi Island, Portage Island and the Lummi Peninsula that opens into the Strait of Georgia. The city lies west of Mount Baker and Lake Whatcom, the source of its drinking water. Bellingham is situated north of the Skagit Valley, best known for their annual tulip festival. Whatcom Creek runs through the center of the city. The downtown has evolved into a pedestrian friendly location with ample restaurants, boutique shops and entertainment venues.
