The views and opinions expressed in this presentation do not necessarily reflect those of the Alabama Department of Archives and History. February 20th, 2020 - Food for Thought continues another year of fascinating lectures on the rich history of Alabama at the Alabama Department of Archives and History on Thursday, February 20 at 12:00 pm when Sheena Harris will present “Margaret Murray Washington, Tuskegee Reformer.” During her presentation, historian Sheena Harris will discuss the extraordinary life of activism led by Margaret Murray Washington, the third wife of Tuskegee’s Booker T. Washington. In the early twentieth century, Margaret worked tirelessly along with other African American women to broaden society’s understanding of what it meant to be black, a woman, a southerner, a wife, a leader, and a caretaker in an often violent world. Harris’s presentation is based on her upcoming book, Beyond the Veil, the first biography of Margaret Murray Washington. Harris is an assistant professor of History at Tuskegee University. She also serves as the Interim Director of Student Engagement Initiatives and the coordinator of the University-wide Honors Program. Harris earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees in political science and history from Florida A&M University. She received her Ph. D. in African American History from the University of Memphis. Harris has published works on Margaret Murray Washington, Black Women’s Clubs, and Respectability politics.
